The Space

The Art of "Between"

Hazama: Like depth within a shadow.

Time at Hazama
is the bridge
between your everyday and a somewhere else.

A private kitchen for local flavors,
Dine out in the vibrant town,
Or step into a cozy local bar hidden in the quiet night.

The comfort of your own bath,
filled with the warmth of a natural Onsen.
Or will you wander into the mists of the public springs?

How you stay is up to you.
As many stories to tell as nights you spend.
Welcome home to Hazama — your space in between.

The living room features large sliding glass doors facing south, creating a cozy sunlit spot that feels like a small indoor terrace. In addition to these doors, there are two windows on the east side. All windows are fitted with traditional Shoji paper screens. As the east side faces our neighbor’s house, we kindly ask that you keep those screens closed to maintain privacy. Two single folding beds are tucked away in the southern sunlit space.

A television is located against the eastern wall, between the dining table and the sofas. In the northwest corner, you will find a three-tier basket containing your amenities and towels. On the north side of the room, you will find the dining table with a two-person bench and two individual chairs, comfortably seating four. To the south, two sofas face each other across a low coffee table. While it may feel a bit snug, each sofa can also serve as a sleeping space for one person.

The three-tier basket holds your amenities: toiletries and a hairdryer in the upper levels, and towels organized below. We provide these according to the number of guests and the length of your stay.

The kitchen is located on the west side of the living room, separated only by a partial wall to create one spacious, open area. All kitchen facilities are arranged along the western wall. From north to south, you will find the IH cooktop and sink, a cupboard with a microwave and electric kettle, and a 350L refrigerator. This refrigerator has three sections: refrigeration at the top, a freezer in the middle, and a vegetable compartment at the bottom. The trash can is placed against the north wall.

The cooking area features a Takara mini-system kitchen with a single-burner IH cooktop. There is a compact preparation space conveniently located between the burner and the sink.

Under the sink, you will find both wooden and plastic cutting boards, a ceramic knife, 2 sets of bowls and colanders, a universal lid for pots and pans, a cork pot stand, a pot, a frying pan, and a pair of oven mitts.

Regarding the ceramic knife mentioned earlier, you can find it stored in the designated holder located on the inside of the left cabinet door under the sink.

Inside the left drawer of the cupboard, we have provided 6 sets of chopsticks, 6 large forks, 6 small forks, 2 table knives, 6 large spoons, and 6 small spoons. You may also find other items such as disposable chopsticks, all of which are welcome to use.

The right drawer of the cupboard contains various cooking tools, including a measuring cup and spoons, a bottle opener with a can opener, a wine opener, a peeler, kitchen shears, 3 sets of tongs, 2 funnels, a slotted ladle, a standard ladle, a turner, and a wooden spatula.

Inside the bottom cabinet of the cupboard, we provide 6 of each: ceramic bowls (donburi), soup bowls, rice bowls, small plates, and flat plates. You will also find 6 coffee/tea cups, 6 wine glasses, a glass teapot, and plastic wrap. You may also find additional items such as paper plates, which you are welcome to use as you like.

The bedroom is located on the second floor and features a 9-tatami mat space using square-shaped Ryukyu tatami. At the head of the sleeping area, you will find two electrical outlets equipped with USB charging ports. On the wall to the right, there is a dimmer switch for the overhead indirect lighting; press it to turn the light on or off, and rotate it to adjust the brightness to your preference.

The main light switch for the bedroom is located at the entrance (though not shown in the photo). By combining the central ceiling light with the dimmable lighting along the back wall, you can create the perfect ambiance and brightness for your stay.

The tatami area can accommodate two sets of futons, comfortably sleeping two guests under our standard setup. While more guests can sleep here, for a truly comfortable experience, we recommend additional space only for small children sharing the beds. For groups of up to six, the remaining four guests can sleep on the folding beds and sofas on the first floor.

The tatami area is designed as a Koagari (raised floor), sitting about 40cm above the bedroom floor. This elevation allows the space to function both as a traditional Japanese room and as a massive, “super king-size” bed. From the window in this tatami area, which faces south, you can look out over the city streets toward Beppu Bay and Mt. Takasaki rising beyond. There is also an east-facing window on the other wall, but as it faces our neighbor’s house, we recommend keeping the Shoji screens closed for your privacy.

The bathroom is located to the north of the kitchen.

The bath features natural onsen water drawn directly from a source in the historic Kannawa Onsen district.

In addition to the onsen, a shower and faucet with standard tap water are also available. Inside the bathtub, you will find natural brownish accents called “Yunohana” (hot spring flowers/mineral deposits). These minerals contain trace amounts of iron and have naturally stained the surface over time, giving the bath an authentic and rustic hot spring character.

This onsen water is piped from a source approximately 200 meters away. According to the official health department records (displayed within the facility), the water is a sodium-chloride spring, which is specifically indicated for cuts, peripheral circulation failure, excessive sensitivity to cold, depression, and dry skin. In addition to these specific effects, it also provides the general benefits common to all onsen, such as fatigue recovery and health promotion.

The toilet is located to the south of the kitchen.
It is equipped with an electronic bidet (warm-water spray and heated seat).

Parking Area 1
The first parking space is located on-site, facing the road. It is an uncovered space suitable for one compact car. A beverage vending machine is located on the east side of the parking spot. To reach the building from this area, please use the stairs. This photo shows Parking Area 1 viewed from the west.

Parking Area 2
The second parking space is located across the road from the property. It is slightly larger than Parking Area 1 and can accommodate a standard-sized van or SUV. Please note that there is no roof. This photo shows Parking Area 2 from the front (north).

DANGER: STEEP DROP-OFF
The south and east sides of this spot have a sharp 2-meter drop-off. This is extremely dangerous. Please watch your step when getting out of the vehicle and keep a close eye on children. To avoid the risk of your vehicle or passengers falling, please maneuver with extreme caution.

The entrance to the building is accessible via stairs. Step lights are installed to illuminate the path at night; however, please note that they may not turn on if the day has been cloudy due to insufficient solar charging. Additionally, we have purposefully kept the lighting subtle to be mindful of our neighbors’ privacy. Because of this, the number of lights is limited, and the stairs may be difficult to see at night. Please watch your step carefully when entering or leaving after dark.

The entrance door is located at the top of the stairs. On the wall to the left (north side) of the door, you will find the smart lock terminal. To enter, please use the passcode or QR code sent to you before your arrival. To the left of the terminal, there is a door with a handle; this leads to a restricted management area, so please do not open it.

The entrance is a sliding door. Once unlocked, the right-side door will open. The door is equipped with an auto-lock system; it will lock automatically when closed, and you will need your passcode or QR code to re-enter. Occasionally, the auto-lock may not engage perfectly. Please double-check that the door is securely locked whenever you leave the property.
